Waxing Preparation and Aftercare
You have booked yourself in for a little self-love, yet there are a few key points that need to be considered before and after the procedure. This will give you the best results and the best-looking skin.
How long will it last?
Your skin and hair follicles work around the clock and have a cycle that is set out by your body to ensure constant new hairs and skin is being produced. At the regrowth stage, only 1/3 of your hair will have sprouted and started the growth cycle.
- A new waxer or occasional waxer will see hair regrowth within 2-3 week after the appointment.
- A regular waxer will see hair growth around 3-6 weeks after appointment.
In Addition to regular waxing, you will see a decrease in hair density as the hair is not growing as fast or at all!
Before you have had a waxing treatment
- Before you come in for a wax it is important your hair is long enough. From last shave or wax, your hair growth must be around 0.5 – 1cm (approximately three weeks depending on your personal speed of growth or half - on full rice kernel).
- Exfoliating opens up follicles (which minimizes the possibility of ingrowing hairs). We recommend that this is done to the areas to be treated the week before your appointment.
- Do not apply any lotions or creams to the areas to be waxed on the day of your appointment.
- If you are really worried about the pain and the possibility of discomfort we would recommend you take some painkillers around 30 - 60 minutes before your appointment.
- Immediately after the wax, you may see some temporary reactions to a waxing treatment such as redness, minor bumps, and soreness. These are common and often disappear over the next one to two days. If the problems persist after this time, or if you have any queries, please contact us.
After you have had a waxing treatment
Making sure the area is clean, aired and bacteria free is the best way to ensure you stay hair free and fresh for as long as possible.
- Ensure the waxed area is kept clean and try to avoid excessive heat or friction for the following one to two days.
- NO SWIMMING, SPAS or SUNBATHING 24 hours before or after your appointment to ensure our skin is protected and hair removal results last longer.
- To help avoid friction wear loose-fitting, clean clothing on the waxed areas - often lace or nylon can rub on the sensitive areas and cause infection.
- Do not apply lotions, deodorants, powders or body sprays etc. for 24 hours to the treated areas unless your therapist has recommended them to you as they may cause irritation
Prevention of ingrown hairs
An ingrown hair is a newly developed follicle that cannot pierce the surface of the skin and in return will grow under the skin and cause an infection. These can be caused through a variety of hair removal treatments blocking the follicle opening such as electrolysis, waxing or shaving and occurs in both genders. Using appropriate measures and products can help this problem be avoided.
Exfoliation helps after waxing
- This removes the top layer of dead skin cells
- Before taking your daily shower use a dry coarse body mitt (on dry skin) – this dry brushing is essential.
- We recommend this type of exfoliation be started three days after your waxing session and be done two or three times a week.
- If ingrown hairs do happen then speak with your waxing technician about products that can help.
Recommended exfoliants:
Loofah, sugar scrub, exfoliating mitt plus in-store products.
Moisturise after Waxing
- Moisturize every day from 24 -48 hours after your waxing.
- This helps to nourish the skin and protect it preventing the problems of irritation and flaking.
- With the exfoliating treatment eliminating the problem causing the ingrown hair the moisturizer will soften the skin and make it easier for the hairs to grow through the skin’s outer layer
